Nodegarden

Competition entry for a glashouse in Merano, Italy
by Daniel Koehler and Rasa Navasaityte, 2008.

Nodegarden is an interpretation of the type of the palm tree house from the 19th century. The task of a palm house is to create a climate zone (environment). The building creates and maintains an ecosystem. Logical Consequence: The building itself becomes an environment and, with time, part of the ecosystem.
The figure here is a visible expression of environments: an environment being. It is diapol to the architectural concept of the shell and shielding: the"climatic architecture" of buildings. The shell becomes a part, an in-between as part of an ecosystem. Plants stand in a forest. The structure is an integral part of the artificial ecosystem. The usual function of carrying here is extended with tasks of irrigation, lighting, shading, vegetation, climate differentiation, ventilation. The abundance of construction allows the interweaving of ground, nature, and architectural objects.
